What is the best way to treat a sprained ankle?
I know many people have already asked this, but all circumstances are different and I would appreciate it if you guys would help me out. I sprained my ankle Sunday night (playing hockey) and it did not really affect me until Monday during rugby practice. The pain was bearable up until today; my ankle is badly swollen and I cannot apply much pressure to it. I am mainly concerned because I have hockey tryouts on Saturday and am eager to know what I can do to be ready by then.
Ice water soak,20 min.Switch immediately to hotish/warm water soak 20 min..Alternate soaking in the ice water 20 minutes each time and the Hot/warm water (As hot as you can stand it without actually burning yourself) 20 minutes each time for 3x’s each per session 4x’s daily everyday. It’s easiest to get 2 buckets and have 1 with Ice cubes and water in it and 1 you can addhot water to as it cools down.Between this you must keep your weight off the ankle, raise it above heart level for the first 2-3 days and 4x’s daily for 1-2 hours each day after.Unless you cannot, take advil 600mg-800mg.every 6-8 hours to aid in swelling reduction. Best taken with food to buffer your stomach and wrap with an ace bandage but not tightly as this will cut off proper circulation needed for healing and proper blood flow.If you can,try staying down until the game though you’re really pushing it with the ankle.I recommend canceling and if you haven’t already, get it x-rayed.It may be worse than you think.Rule out a hairline fracture, they can be tricky and are very dangerous left undiagnosed. You could become crippled in that leg or worse if you have more wrong with it than you think. My mom almost died from hers (fine hairline ankle fracture) as it formed a blood clot which could have broken up and traveled through her bloodstream and if they don’t disolve properly,it can cause a stroke or a heart attack.A tiny piece the size of the tip of a needle is all it will take just in case you didn’t know. Be safe and play another time even if it’s only a sprain, let it have the time to heal fully. The game will always be there.
Sprained Ankles can be healed in less than a week
